Course Aims
This course aims to provide an introduction to selected aspects of psychological theory and research. Study of this course should provide opportunities to develop critical skills of analysis, interpretation and evaluation. There will also be opportunities to explore how psychology has contributed to an understanding of individual, social and cultural diversity.

Entry Requirements
A minimum of a B and two Cs in any combination of Science, Mathematics and English is required since a critical element of the course is the development of the skills of scientific analysis, interpretation and evaluation.                                       

Course Content
In Year 12, students are introduced to key approaches and the study of psychology, including the methods used in psychological research. Issues such as gender and social influence are studied as well as topics from cognitive psychology, including memory and eye witness testimony. Students will also conduct their own research.
In Year 13, perspectives and methods are developed further as well as a consideration of developmental and abnormal psychology. Students will also conduct an extended piece of research.

Assessment
‘A/S’ level consists of two modular examinations of 1½ hours each, one taken in January of Year 12, the other in June. Additionally, students undertake a practical investigation which is submitted in the second term. 

A further piece of coursework is required for ‘A2’ as well as two further modules in January and June of Year 13.

Career and Higher Education Opportunities
Students may go on to study psychology at university and may then proceed to post graduate study to become clinical, educational or forensic psychologists. Psychology combines well with other subjects and the skills of analysis, interpretation and evaluation support other disciplines.

Psychology is a flexible subject and is useful in fields such as marketing, personnel and finance.
