Not just a Library
The Downs School library is a whole school information centre which is a busy working environment throughout the day, every day.
The librarians provide an automated library which offers a comprehensive range of materials to support the curriculum and leisure requirements of students and staff. They offer a good selection of books, which is regularly updated (including an excellent sixth form library) and a range of careers and further/higher education
resources. There are 16 networked computers which are all Internet linked.
The librarians promote learning that is increasingly independent with established programmes of research and study skills tuition for all Year 7 and Year 12 students. Priority is also given both to reader development for lower school students and to private study for sixth formers. All students are able to use the books and computers for homework and/or reading for pleasure during morning breaks and at lunchtimes. A library ethos is expected at all times.
A weekly book group is popular and the library hosts various events throughout the year including celebrations of National Poetry Day and World Book Day.
