January 2008 - Saturday Living Languages

A pilot scheme which invites adults and children to come and experience learning a new language together.   Arabic and Mandarin will be taught on the same day, at the same time here at the Downs School.   Early feedback may mean separate adults/children classes, in addition.

January 24th 2008 - Languages at Work Conference

This conference is aimed at all 6th form students in West Berkshire who study languages. At this event students produce a range of materials in the foreign language of their choice and hear from representatives from business.

February 25th 2008 - Multi-lingual Futures Day

A day for Year 11 students from a range of different schools. Students learn how useful languages are in the world of work and have the opportunity to “apply” for jobs where they would have to use a language. 

May 1st 2008 - May Day Primary Languages Event
5 – 7pm, the Downs School

Headteachers and modern foreign language coordinators across the borough and into Oxfordshire and Wiltshire are invited to attend this free evening event.   We will be joined by authors and publishers of major schemes of work and resources who will be delivering their insights on their latest resource or a favoured teaching technique.   Come and share their thoughts, discuss teaching tools, or simply share and listen.

June 30th 2008 - Around the World in a Day

The Vikings are coming! So are British Airways, Africa, India, Russia and Japan.. Our federation primary children in year five and six will be joining us, passport in hand, on our cultural and linguistic trip through time and space.

Parents: expect the children home exhausted and happy.

July 9th 2008 - European Day

A day for Year 8 students from secondary schools across the county. Students take part in many different activities which increase their knowledge of the European Community
