The Downs School Visit First World War Battle Fields

Every two years the History Department organise a trip to the First World War battle fields for Year 10 and 11 students studying GCSE History.
This year the trip departed early on Friday, 2nd May and returned on Sunday evening.
The group travelled to Belgium via the Channel Tunnel, visited a German and a British Cemetery and spent some time at the “Flanders Fields Museum” in Ypres.
Saturday was spent on the Somme visiting the Thiepval Memorial, Newfoundland Park and the crater at La Boiselle, before returning to Ypres for the last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate.
On Sunday, before returning to England, students went back to the Ypres Salient to see Hill 60, the trenches at Sanctuary Wood and the battle field of Passchendaele. As this is primarily an educational visit, there were plenty of opportunity for study and discussion.
Below is a selection of photographs showing some of the places visited. To halt the slide show on a particular picture, hover your mouse over it until you wish to continue.
