Course Aims
To develop an understanding of economic concepts and theories through a critical consideration of current economic issues, problems and institutions that affect everyday life. Students will be able to explain, analyse and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the Market Economy and the role of government within it.Entry Requirements

Course Content
At AS Level two modules are studied:
- Markets in Action
- The National and International Economy
At A2 level two further modules are studied:
- Transport Economics
- The Global Economy
The course is delivered using a wide variety of current materials, including newspaper, magazine, TV and web-based content.
Assessment
Unit 1 - Markets in Action (1 hour 30 minutes - 50% of the AS mark/25% of total mark)Unit 2 - The National and International Economy (1 hour 30 minutes - 50% of the AS mark/25% of total mark)
Both examinations are compulsory multi-part questions. The questions in each paper are based on separate short stimulus articles relating to the unit content.
Unit 3 - Transport Economics (2 hours - 25% of total mark)
Unit 4 - The Global Economy (2 hours - 25% of total mark)
Unit 3 is a two-part examination. Part A contains compulsory multi-part questions based on separate short stimulus articles relating to the unit content. Part B requires writing a structured essay from a choice of three questions.
Unit 4 is a synoptic module; material from any unit can be examined. The examination is a number of compulsory multi-part questions based on pre-released stimulus materials.
A level Combinations
Students often combine Economics with Mathematics and an Arts or Humanities option, such as Politics, Law, Sociology, Geography or History. It is also an excellent option to combine Economics with Business Studies or Sciences.Career and Higher Education Opportunities
