The Downs School
“Ready Steady Cook”
Four finalists from Years 8 and 9 of the Downs School, Compton had a chance to show their culinary flare by cooking a three-course meal in a “Ready Steady Cook” competition. The prize for the winners was a day in the kitchen with Mr Rudd, Head Chef at the Royal Oak Hotel in Yattendon.
The students were the finalists from a small group selected from the design and technology gifted and talented group who have demonstrated outstanding performance in different areas of design and technology. There were two students from Year 8 and two from Year 9. The competition was held on Wednesday 19th March and organised by the food technology teacher, Miss Hoang

The whole competition was to promote healthy eating and to get young people interested in cooking dishes from all around the world. Being a language college, the school was keen to support the chefs in this challenge and was amazed at the sheer high standard of the food produced. The atmosphere in the kitchen was tense and the stress showed on the competitors’ faces.
The aromas in the air were so appetising that they made stomachs rumble. There was a wonderful array of colours on the plates from the reds of the tomatoes, to the greens of the mange touts.

As the judges started to tuck into the food the room was so silent that you could have heard a pin drop. The judges, Mrs Houldey (Headteacher), Mrs Miller (Director of Language College), Mr Doran (Head of Design and Technology) and Mr Rudd (Head Chef from The Royal Oak), where all amazed at how professional the food tasted and how vibrant the food looked. The judges were heard to say that the food ‘had a zap’, ‘a bit of a kick’ and that Robert’s sauce ‘packed a lot of punch’.

After much deliberation, the judges selected the winners.
