Cross Curricular Days

Shakespeare and Elizabethan England
Creation comes to the Downs in Compton

dance rehearsal

On Monday 9th June, the Creation Theatre company came to the Downs school in Compton. They generously showed us how to, act, sing, dance and play in the Elizabethan style taking us back in time which showed us what it was like in the Shakespearian theatre.

The pupils were split up into groups: each group had a leader from the Creation team and had a different part of a Shakespearian performance to work on together. Some of the activities were acting, singing and dancing. Tristan said, “I learnt about rhythm and songs from Elizabethan times.”

read through rehearsal

Throughout the day the pupils learnt all about the different parts of the Elizabethan theatre. Luke said, “I learnt about all the different types of instruments that would have been used in Elizabethan theatres.” The pupils learnt in all aspects of their groups, in the dancing groups we learnt how to dance like an Elizabethan. In the acting groups they learnt how to speak like they would have spoken back in the Elizabethan times. A member of the group called Gemma said, “ I was surprised how differently the audience acted compared to the way we do now”.

The pupils enjoyed the warming up at the beginning most and also the performance at the end because it was really good fun!
