Cross Curricular Trip to Berlin

Historians and Linguists see the sights!

In December 2010 the German and History departments ran a trip to Berlin for 20 year 11 students.

Reichstag, Berlin

It was a fabulous trip which took in many of the historical sites of the German capital city. Linguists and history students were able to practice language skills and experiencing the culture and history of the city was also beneficial to all deciplines of study. The historians were enthralled by visits to the Berlin wall and Check point Charlie (the check point which divided east and west Berlin), the Stasi prison (run by the Communists during their occupation of the East Berlin in the Cold War), and the Jewish museum (which was profoundly moving). The inspiration of visiting these places, which have been so long taught about, and seeing them first hand was great.

Whilst immersing ourselves in the historical, students were able to practise their German and put it to good use on the time available to visit the Christmas markets and shops.

Although the extensive amounts of snow in both Berlin and London made the journey home slightly more eventful than originally planned, the students were brilliant, their behaviour was phenomenal and they really engaged in every activity and visit we made.

It was a brilliant trip and we plan to run it again next year (in October though to avoid snow related problems) for the current year 10s.
