Sponsored Walk

The Downs School community turned out in force for the 50th anniversry sponsored walk. Although the weather was a little foreboding with grey clouds and a steady drizzle for much of the morning the decision was taken to hold the walk, a decision that proved to be the right one as the reserve date was a day of torrential rain.the runners

With Sixth Form marshals in position and Mrs Murphy organising the half way registration up on the Ridgeway the signal was given to release the masses. In front of everyone was Anthony from Year 12 followed closely by Tom and the evergreen Mr Colling. As the initial wave of around 100 runners went through they were followed by the rest of the school.

On the Downs
Wave upon wave of walkers snaked their way out of Compton, up Churn Road and onto the Downs before dropping back down the village near the church. Whilst conditions were damp underfoot there was only one really sticky point and it was good to see so many students dressed appropriately for the conditions.

The walk also saw many staff dressed in camouflage gear to add to the occasion.

50th birthday cake

As the walk finished and the students were checked back in all of the participants received a piece of birthday cake to celebrate the school’s fiftieth anniversary. The cake was cut by Mary Roots who was a student at the school and the longest current serving member of staff.

The afternoon finished with a massed rendition of Happy Birthday conducted by Mrs Houldey. Over 1000 students took part and it appears that, as far as we know, no-one was lost or injured.
