It was both an emotional and optimistic atmosphere as 4 ex-Downs School students set off on a 14 day sponsored bike ride to Southern Portugal to raise money for a fund they have set up in memory of their fellow student and close friend Adam Clayton, who tragically died, in 2008.

The aim of the Foundation is to encourage, and give a helping hand to young people from all walks of life to pursue a career in the medical profession. Each year the foundation grants 2 support scholarships to students in West Berkshire. The friends intend to continue fund raising to support the foundation as a lasting legacy to Adam. They believe:

It was a fitting location to start at the Downs School in West Berkshire, where 13 years previously, they had all met, shared their education together and forged such a strong and lasting friendship. All the team members’ families, Adam’s family, current Downs School pupils and Headteacher were there to cheer and wish them well. Many teachers waving the friends off had taught members of the team and gave words of admiration and support. Below are pictures taken, just prior and as the team started on their 1800mile journey.
