Our annual Prize Giving and Certificate Presentation Evening took place on the 16th December 2009.

We were delighted to welcome as our guest speaker for the evening, Mike Robinson, TV chef and proprieter of The Pot Kiln. He lives locally and he said how much he appreciated being part of the local community. He spoke of his own experience of school life and said, although his acadenic achievements were good, they probably were not as good as they could have been.

He stumbled on his passion for cooking great food while in France and, once he realised what he wanted to do, he pursued it relentlessly.

Mike Robinson presented awards for academic achievement, but also for effort and successes in sport, work experience, performing arts and service to the school.

All students who completed their GCSE examinations last year were invited to receive their formal examination certificates and congratulations on their excellent results.

Our former Sixth Formers were also invited back to receive their formal examination certificates and Awards. It is particularly pleasing to welcome them back from University, Gap Year travels and success in training and employment.

The Headteacher's closing remarks were given by Mr Prosser, Deputy Head. He said that Mrs Houldey was particularly sorry not to be able to be at the event this year as it is a significant highlight of the school calendar. She particularly enjoys looking back over the previous academic year and formally recognising the outstanding achievements of our students. That achievement comes as a result of the efforts of staff at all levels and the hard work and commitment of the young people.

He said he was proud to be able to say that The Downs School is among the very top schools in the country for exam success but equally proud to be able to celebrate much more than that. Our students achieve in all walks of life, contribute to the local and wider community, excel in different aspects of education and learn from each other, demonstrating that the Downs experience is learning for life.
