National Poetry Day Celebration
Poetry for All

Pupils and staff recently enjoyed our annual National Poetry Day celebration in the library during lunchtime. The pupils photographed had won prizes for their “work” poetry, which was written in line with this year’s theme.

An audience of pupils came to listen to staff from various school departments, including maths, science, history, modern languages and English, reading poetry and book extracts.
Staff were treated to coffee and home-made banana cake and the pupils enjoyed traditional iced cakes. The library was decorated for the occasion with a workman model and various artefacts to represent working life.
It was a huge pleasure to go to a poetry reading and be so entertained during the working day – our students respond so well to creative opportunities - with excitement and enthusiasm,
Mrs Houldey said.
Mrs Stride explained:
As well as being an opportunity to appreciate the pleasures of poetry, the event allows pupils who have just started at secondary school to relax in the company of their subject teachers. ![]()
Mrs Coker (Librarian) added:
I enjoyed listening to “The Geography Teacher” (by Brian Patten) which describes the lasting impression that a good (hard-working) teacher can make and “The Village Blacksmith” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. I also loved extracts from Laurie Lee’s “Cider With Rosie” which praised a mother’s work in the home.![]()
