said Mr C Gifford, Peer Mentor Trainer

Nicole was in the original team of peer mentors trained at The Downs School in May 2005. Nicole showed immense enthusiasm from the start and participated well in the training day. It soon became obvious that the younger students with whom she worked felt very comfortable in her presence and found her to be of real benefit helping them fit into school life.

In Nicole’s second year as a peer mentor she was chosen to mentor a vulnerable student new to the school. This student needed clear and precise boundaries and ongoing intensive and structured support. Nicole was able to differentiate between when to take responsibility and when to involve a member of staff.

Peerlink organised the awards evening in the grounds of Westminister Abbey and all winners received an overnight stay in a London hotel, followed by a trip on the London Eye the following morning. The winners and runners up also met up with Kevin Spacey (actor and artistic director at the Old Vic theatre) and were awarded their trophies by Kylie Morris from “More4 News” and Simon Fanshawe, broadcaster and journalist.   Nicole won the award for Peer Mentor of the Year which was one of 6 different categories, 3 of which were individual awards.
