Compton Walk for Year 7
Geography and ICT

During a mild and dry week in the Autumn term,Year 7 students went on a teacher led walk through our local village of Compton looking for examples of ‘Britishness’ and photographing their choices along the way.

Each class made the walk separately during their timetabled geography lesson. Students recorded a soundscape, listening carefully to the environment around them. They use their photographs to explain how Compton demonstrates evidence of ‘Britishness’ and also to consider whether or not a sound can be defined as typically British. The information is presented in a multi-layered Geographical Information System combining both ICT and geographical skills.
This investigation into our local community is all part of studying ‘Who Are We?’ Students are encouraged to consider their identities on a range of scales through asking questions such as ‘Who am I?’, ‘What is Britishness?’, ‘What do landscapes mean to me?’ and ‘Am I global citizen?’. In this way valuable discussions and ideas are exchanged about personal geographies, students are lead to critically think about their place in the world and to become excited about the ever increasing diversities of the world around them.
