The Egg Race Challenge

On 9th June The Downs School held a cross curricular day, part of which involved the departments of Design Technology and Science challenging students to a creative and practical problem solving day. The ideas were based upon The Great Egg Race Challenge.

30 teams; one day; 5 challenges: propel a table tennis ball into a bin; construct a bridge and transport an egg over it; build a boat to transport an egg; transport an egg vertically in the slowest possible time; transport an egg 3 metres from a height of 1 metre from the floor.

Spending a whole day on a project worked incredibly well with the combination of teacher talents from different subject areas. The energy and excitement which was generated was phenomenal. Students were able to bring to the fore all sorts of skills and talents, sometimes, hitherto undiscovered. Everyone was exhausted but felt it was really worth while,
said Headteacher Mrs Houldey.
