Year 11 Careers Fair
Speedy Careers
Year 11 students had a unique experience of careers advice in the form of a ‘Speedy Careers’ day, calling on the experience and knowledge of the parents and wider school community.

The day was organised with the Education Business Partnership (EBP) and saw over sixty volunteers from jobs such as law, the police, architecture, journalism, midwifery, and design. Students were put into small groups to talk to the volunteers, giving them an opportunity to speak directly to people from a variety of professions.
Gabrielle McGarvey from the EBP said:
the students might think they want to be one thing at 16, but at 45 they’ll likely be doing something completely different. One of our key messages today is - you don’t have to know what you want to be, but you do need to follow your passion, use what you’re good at and take on the advice you are given.![]()

Mr Bell, who is Head of Applied Learning and Careers, organised the Speedy Careers event in the light of government cuts to the careers support and advice for young people.

We wanted to be creative with how we deliver careers information to students so we decided to use this massive untapped resource - the parents’ experience
, he said.
The day should show the students that there are many different pathways available to reach any job.![]()
One student commented,
It was great to have a chance to talk directly to adults about their careers and how they got there, and we got to talk about lots of different jobs and careers. I’m interested in Media so it was great to talk to a journalist about how they got into it.![]()
Mr Bell added:
It feels great to be involving the wider school community to give the best possible advice to our young people.![]()
Many thanks to all the volunteers who gave up their time to come in on the day, the event was a huge success with the students. The school’s initial request for volunteers received a hugely positive response for which we are extremely grateful. The school hopes to be able to run similar events in the future.
