Careers advice is available to students through on-line resources and face to face interviews. We secure independent careers advice for students from the Adviza Careers Service, who are able to guide students making decisions about their future, in particular the transition from school to college, university or apprenticeship. All students have access to on-line resources to help find them out about “next steps” at each stage of their time at school. As well as undertaking personality quizzes, they can find out detailed information on every career sector from qualification requirements to salary expectations.
Each academic year students will have lessons to develop their careers knowledge. These are delivered through the Personal Development Programme. They will cover topics such as work stereotypes, what employers want and interview techniques.
The Downs School encourages interactions with local employers, both through employee representatives coming into school to speak to students about their industry and students visiting workplaces for taster sessions and work experience. As students move up the school they will have the chance to participate in Careers Fairs and other events such as Interview Workshops. These can be whole year events within school, as well as more specialist careers events for specific industries. Previously these have included trips to Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Industry Spotlight events in conjunction with other local schools, an NHS Careers Day, etc.
Students are also given opportunities to consider the development of their academic career. Students considering study at local colleges can attend taster days at Newbury and Sparsholt Colleges. There are also trips to universities to encourage students to raise their aspirations.
