Year 10 Fundraising
Baan Unrak, Thailand
The Year 10 fundraising this year is to benefit Baan Unrak, an orphanage/school in Thailand visited and supported by Jan Bentham, a former teacher at the Downs School.
Mrs Bentham was their Head of Year in Year 7 and they remember her very fondly. They first met her when she visited all the primary schools and put their minds at rest about the transition to the Downs. She then watched over them as Year 7's, knowing each student by name and encouraging them to make the most of all the opportunities they had in life. At the end of that year she herself seized the chance to go and teach in Thailand and, despite her untimely death on 1st May 2011 at the age of 53, she spent 2 years living out her own view of life which was most certainly 'Carpe Diem'.

The very many fund raising activities organised by the students raised a staggering £948.51 which was presented to Rachel Bentham, Jan's daughter, at the Year 10 assembly on 18th July.
Baan Unrak has a 'wish list' of specific items on its web site and Year 10 needed to
decide whether they should buy a shelter, a dumper truck or give the
money to general funds.
The decision was put to the vote following the presentation of the cheque and the majority vote was to contribute to general funds.
