Young Enterprise
Neon Nights Disco

On Friday 5th February, at 3.30 pm, the Downs School hall was transformed with neon lights. A group of Year 12 students had organised a disco for Year 7 and 8 students. As part of the sixth form curriculum, the Downs School offer enrichment subject together with AS level and Diploma courses.
As part of Young Enterprise, the Year 12 students, Will, James, Emma, Josh, Joe, James, Richard and Danny, formed an event organiser company, NWA. Young Enterprise is designed to introduce young people to how a business works, the roles within it and what these roles mean when running a successful business. Each of the students took on a business role such as marketing, sales and company secretary. The students said:
We have learnt that for a business to function well, everyone has to pull their weight. If not everyone suffers.![]()
We now appreciate the roles people play and how much planning goes into everything.![]()

The disco was a tremendous success, both as a business venture and for those who bought tickets. Over 100 tickets, glow sticks and refreshments were sold. The music included the current favourites with the youngsters screaming their appreciation for such songs as Owl City’s Fireflies!
Prizes on the night were awarded to the best dressed from each year and the best dancer. A spokesperson from NWA said;
It was truly very difficult to choose. All had put in so much effort, with tutus in bright colours, fluorescent tights, hot pants, T-shirts, glow sticks and neon balloons and the standard of dancing was amazing!![]()
