Festive Celebrations 2017

Christmas Fair Charity event for Save the Children

The Christmas Fair was held on 8th December. Students, staff and parents came together to run stalls selling Christmas gifts and food, the auction of donated prizes, and the raffle. Thank you to everyone who supported the Christmas Fair, which raised £730 for the Save the Children charity.

Christmas Science Lectures

On 8th December, some Year 9 students went on a Science Trip to the Oxford Museum of Natural History.
The first lecture was about mutations in DNA and Charles Darwin's discoveries about evolution. Four volunteers took part in an experiment to show how species develop and adapt.
The second lecture was entitled "Mince Pies, Mistletoe and Mathematics" and explained how mathematicians use mathematical modelling to predict things like the weather and trajectory of launched items such as snowballs! The lecture also explained that professional mathematicians are needed to help make movies, such as Disney's Frozen. This provided the students with information on how things in the world work due to mathematical modelling.
Overall the trip was extremely interesting and very educational!

Christmas Lunches

The catering staff excelled themselves once more and served almost 600 delicious Christmas lunches over three days, with crackers, carols and all the trimmings!

Carol Concert

Parents and staff were treated to a lovely evening of carols and seasonal musical performances on 14th December. This was a wonderful event, with refeshments provided once again by the Friends of The Downs School.

Christmas Jumper Day

We had a fantastic array of Christmas jumpers, worn by staff and students who also donated money to charity for the privilege of not wearing their usual uniform or smart clothes! A total of £750 was raised for charity.
