Sponsored Walk, 22nd September 2017

The annual sponsored walk is a really important part of the school's British Week programme, when we celebrate traditional British values. The whole school community comes together to raise money and to enjoy an afternoon in our wonderful English countryside. This year almost 1,200 students and staff walked a 10 km circular route from the school and along the Ridgeway.

Sponsor money totalling £16 000 has been raised by students, and this will be used for student rewards and a variety of other things to benefit students, like the new school minibus. Dressing up was all part of the fun, and there were many imaginative outfits that really added to our enjoyment of the event. Year 13 students did a brilliant job of marshalling the route, keeping everyone going with their high spirits and encouragement.

Emergency vehicles along the route were provided by local volunteers, and back at school parents helped staff with the final check in of walkers. The Friends of The Downs School were very busy with hungry customers at their tuck shop. Students who were unable to walk provided much needed cups of tea to returning staff and applauded walkers as they arrived back.

Mr Prosser said "Each year our sponsored walk keeps getting better and better, and this event was just brilliant. The sun shone, students were in great spirits, and their behaviour was perfect. Well done to everybody, I am very proud of our school community. Enormous thanks to everyone who has been involved or supported us today, you have helped to raise a tremendous sum of money for the benefit of our pupils"
