Crazy Shoes in the Library!

Year 9 Art Project

Throughout April visitors to The Downs School library have been treated to a display of artwork shoe sculptures.

shoe sculptureYear 9 students explored the artist Jethro Haynes' work and produced a series of observations of different types of shoes using a variety of different media. They then went on to explore their chosen location, for example London, and researched key landmarks.

These sketches were then used as inspiration to inform their shoe sculpture design ideas. Students built card constructions onto their shoes and then used modroc to cover the structures. Tissue paper and PVA glue were then used to create a surface to paint onto and add surface decoration.

The project was a lot of fun and the results so stunning that it seemed a shame to shut them away in a cupboard. Our library always displays lots of topical material and they welcomed the opportunity.

Librarian Mrs Coker said how many favourable comments had been made about the sculptures, from parents and other visitors to the school as well as staff and students.

open quote We are proud to show off how talented our Year 9's are. Some of the designs are out of this world and they certainly add another dimension to the library. It is great that we have been able to reach a lot of people who otherwise would not have been able to see this amazing work. We are hoping that such displays become a regular feature of our library.close quote
