House Music Competition

2011

Before October half term the Downs School hosted the annual house music competition. House Music is a highly anticipated event, with many students throughout the school taking part.

The competition is made up of three different categories; the choir, solo and ensemble.  Students from the senior school did all the organising with minimal help from the music department. The result demonstrated the fantastic time and effort the house leaders and others put in, organising the choir, holding auditions for the solo and ensemble sections and generally making it all happen. Two Year 13 pupils Ben and Jack hosted the show, entertaining the audience before introducing the next act.

This year Chiltern House, the new addition to the Downs School Houses, made their debut and despite only being made up of Year 7's and 8's, they played a great role.

The competition itself was won by Lowbury, only their second triumph in House Music, the previous time being 2005. Lowbury won the solo audition thanks to a brilliant rendition of Eva Cassidy's True Colours by Year 7 Jessica .  Lowbury also managed to claim second spot in both the ensemble and choir, but had to hold off strong competition from Aldworth, who won both those categories, perfroming; Fall at Your Feet by Crowded House for the ensemble and Hey Soul Sister by Train Is It in the choir section.

It was a great night, with a fantastic atmosphere and allowed parents to see how both younger and older students can work so successfully together, showcasing incredible musical talent. Each house worked tremendously hard and it was great to see their hard work pay off with great performances by all.
