Students from Years 8-10 were invited to take part in the Schools Choreography Challenge run by The Corn Exchange Learning and Participation Department, and its local and regional dance partners. The Choreography Challenge brought a professional dance practitioner into The Downs School to work with our invited group of students for a day to teach some dance material. Following the workshop, our dance practitioner set us a suitable choreographic challenge which we worked on in weekly lunchtime rehearsals.
We performed our piece at the Corn Exchange on Thursday 3 November at 7.30pm. This was a new and exciting opportunity for The Downs School, providing us with the opportunity to learn from a successful dance artist as well as taking part in a live performance on a professional stage. Students participated in the Choreography Challenge learned to:
Explore their creativity
Build important life skills such as resilience, responsibility and communication
Contributed their own ideas to a group piece, developing their teamwork skills
Had an opportunity to celebrate their achievements with other schools and groups
Developed their own physical and choreographic skills
On the day of the performance, we attended a dress and technical rehearsal at the Corn Exchange.
