BBC School News Report

Year 8 Students Making News

Thursday 24th March is News Day!

On 24th March 2011, students at the Downs School made the news for real and published on this web site before the deadline of 1600 GMT on the News Day !

Students from year 8 made and broadcast the news for real as part of the BBC News School Report, an annual event organised by the BBC. The BBC web site linked to our student report and mentioned the Downs School reporting.

In the weeks leading up to the big day, the team worked hard researching some of the features and topics they intend to cover. A huge story this year for The Downs School was that this academic year, 2010-11 is the 50th anniversary of the first year of the school. The student reporters interviewed former teachers and students of the school to get a flavour of what the school was like 50 years ago.

Naturally, on the News Day, there was also breaking news that the team needed to work fast to film and edit in time for the deadline.

BBC News School Report gives 11-14 year-old students in the UK the chance to make their own news reports for a real audience, simultaneously creating video, audio and text-based news reports, and publishing them on a school website, to which the BBC aims to link.

This is an ambitious and challenging event. There are always lots of last minute tasks and tense moments but all the students gain greatly from the experience. To view more information about previous Downs School News Reports follow the appropriate links below.
