About The Downs School

Headteacher, Mr. Prosser took over the role on January 1st 2014. He was previously a Deputy Headteacher at the school and therefore has been a key part of the school's success. He relishes the challenge to lead the school to ‘Beyond Outstanding’.

The Downs School is a co-educational, comprehensive school serving the scattered rural community of the Berkshire Downs and beyond. Many parents beyond the catchment area from Newbury, Thatcham and south Oxfordshire choose The Downs School in preference to others in the locality.

The school aims to develop in young people the capacity to live as independent, self-motivated adults and the ability to function as successful and contributing members of society. We have a vision for the school that underpins everything we do. The educational programme leads pupils towards: achievement in literacy and numeracy, competence in a variety of learning and social skills, the development of a variety of sporting, artistic and practical talents to the highest level, the acquisition of social, spiritual and moral values, flexible attitudes and thus the ability to adapt to future change in modern society.

The school was described by Ofsted in 2013 as an outstanding school and was judged outstanding in every area. Our exam results at both GCSE and A Level were again excellent this year.

Over the past 20 years the school has established a growing reputation both locally and nationally and is now considered to be one of the top comprehensive schools in the country. We believe in a partnership between the school, parents and students where good communication is key. We have regular newsletters and a website for parents and carers where we aim to provide, all in one place, useful information about wide ranging issues. Parents and carers can also access on-line information about their child, including attendance, and we use an email system which allows us to send messages quickly to specific groups of parents, carers, staff or students about any aspect of school life. We also have an on-line learning website for students where they can access a variety of learning resources from anywhere with an internet connection.

At the end of August 2012 we formed a federation with Compton Primary School which strengthened the already strong link with all our feeder schools ensuring a smooth transition between Primary and Secondary education. This also allows our teachers to exchange ideas and good practice which benefit learning at all stages. Levels of academic achievement are continuing to rise and the school has been oversubscribed for many years. The Downs School is part of the Downland Teaching Alliance.
