The Downs School Win Rounders Tournament - Berkshire Festival of Sport
Brilliant!
Can I just say that your students were an absolute delight to have at the event. Obviously they were very talented and strong winning the Berkshire festival is a great achievement. But also they were evidently so polite, sporting, courteous and were an excellent representation of your school. I had several very positive comments about your students and school from the competition team and other staff across Berkshire.
The Year 8 Rounders team was very successful in the West Berkshire Schools tournament and was therefore selected as one of the two teams to represent West Berkshire at the Festival of Sport, along with St. Barts.
The tournament was held at the Madjeski Academy on 1st July and was made up of 10 schools from the area, split into two pools. The final pool game was against Trevelyan, The Downs played with great team spirit and determination to win 15 to 7˝. This meant they were through to the final, co-incidentally against St Barts.
The Downs batted first with energy and determination. St Barts were slick on their fielding and managed to eliminate some opponents, however The Downs managed to score 9˝ rounders by the end. It was then St Barts turn to bat. The Downs fielded tight at the start giving away only a few half rounders but St Barts managed to score some full rounders later on in the game. The final score was 9˝ each. To decide on a winner the team with the least amount of players out would win. After some confusion the umpire confirmed the Downs had got St Barts out 4 times and they were declared the winners.
The girls received a gold medal each and a trophy to show their achievements.
