Headteacher Blog 10.06.19Posted on: 10th Jun
We are now fast approaching the end of the academic year, and in this blog I want to take the opportunity to say a huge thank you to our teaching staff and associate staff who make our school such a wonderful place in which to work and learn. I would particularly like to highlight their continual support in enhancing your children’s’ learning experiences by providing an extensive number of trips, clubs, productions and sporting opportunities throughout the academic year.
This academic year we have offered over 70 trips, ranging from week long ski trips, visits to New York, Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, Geography and History trips, our Coen programme, and more besides. Each of our faculties has offered additional learning experiences outside of the classroom.
In addition we continue to offer an extensive number of lunchtime and after school clubs, have had various sporting teams travelling to local schools several times a week competing in interschool competitions, and provided events for students as part of our careers programme. Behind the scenes we have a number of our associate staff giving up their time to organise our highly successful Christmas Fair and charity events throughout the year. The Friends of the Downs work tirelessly to help raise money for the school, and you will often see them selling raffle tickets and refreshments at our amazing school concerts and productions. You could say that as a school it is our duty to provide these activities for your children, to ensure they leave the school as well rounded individuals. However, this would not be possible if it wasn’t for my dedicated team of staff giving up their time, and in many instances sacrificing time with their own family to help your children’s development. I would like to thank those parents who take the time to show their appreciation to the staff who offer these enrichment opportunities. It really does mean a lot to them to be thanked for their efforts.
I would also like to thank our Governing Board for their hard work and tireless campaigning for the school. Finally, a big thank you to our exams team for the huge logistical operation involved in co-ordinating the GCSE and A Level exams. This is an immense task that becomes more difficult every year, with many last minute changes to accommodate. Despite this, the team remain calm and always have smiles on their faces, ensuring that our students have the best possible environment to complete their exams.
Effective teamwork is key to ensuring the smooth running of the school so that we provide the support required for a great learning environment for students and staff. I am extremely proud of the whole team here at The Downs School.
