Extra Curricular, Trips & Activities
Learning extends beyond the classroom extra-curricular activities and large number of trips, both within the UK and overseas. This allows our students to pursue their passions and develop those transferable skills enabling to become well rounded individuals.
Lessons are brought to life through a wide range of educational trips both in the UK and abroad from visiting galleries in Oxford and London, taking advantage of highly professional local theatres, as well as travelling to Stratford and the West End. Our Performing Arts department take students to New York and the Geography Department have an annual trip to Iceland.
We offer an annual year 8 ski trip and language students have taken part in exchange visit to schools in the French Alps, Germany and Spain.
Biannually our 6th formers can take part in a ski trip and there is an opportunity to go on an expedition, which in previous years have gone to Ecuador, Norway and India.
The excellent provision for enrichment and extra-curricular opportunities are central parts to the school’s character and success. Our students enter competitions in debating, public speaking, sport, science, creative writing and maths challenges the list goes on. We benefit hugely from our links with the world-class science community within the local area.
Physical Education at The Downs is about learning through ‘doing and enjoying’. Inter-house sporting competitions are extremely popular and include cross country, netball, hockey, football, ruby, cricket and athletics. We are incredibly proud of our many sporting achievements at local, district and country levels at many of these sports. We also support students at International level in football, badminton, hockey, track and field and swimming.
All forms of Arts – drama, music and dance are used to provide opportunities for students to develop their individual talents which they can showcase in house competitions and our annual produce which have included Calamity Jane, Billy Elliot and Little Shop of Horrors.
